About
Welcome to St. John's Bear, a charming culinary gem nestled in the picturesque town of Miyazu, Kyoto. This delightful diner captures a unique fusion of American and Japanese cuisines, offering an inviting atmosphere that transports you to a nostalgic 1950s setting, adorned with vintage Coca-Cola memorabilia. As I stepped inside, the combination of Japanese tradition and American diner culture piqued my curiosity.
With a menu that caters to diverse palates, St. John's Bear is celebrated for its iconic dishes, including their beloved 'hanbaagu' lunch—a tender, savory hamburger steak that effortlessly straddles the taste profiles of both nations. Although some visitors note that prices are on the higher side, dining here transcends mere cost. The quality and flavor of each plate ensure a memorable experience, making it worthwhile for food enthusiasts eager to explore this cross-cultural culinary landscape.
Breakfast lovers will find solace here, as they serve exquisite morning sets that showcase the best of both worlds. The traditional Japanese breakfast, featuring rice, egg, and miso soup, is around ¥900 and stands out as a rare treat in the area. Furthermore, the serene views from the patio enhance every meal, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty surrounding the restaurant. It's a place where delicious food meets breathtaking scenery.
Customer reviews echo the sentiment of satisfaction, highlighting not only the delectable food but also the friendly service provided by the elderly Japanese couple who run the establishment. Their passion for hospitality is palpable, and the inviting ambiance paired with American classics like pizza and burgers makes it a perfect gathering spot for families and friends.

“ Overpriced (¥1,350 for a pretty basic 'hanbaagu' lunch) but very tasty food that's a successful fusion of American and Japanese. American ads adorn the place, with a focus on Coca Cola and the 1950s. Slightly at odds with all this, it's run by a quite conservative-looking elderly Japanese couple. Sells beer and pizza, too. ”
“ We went here for breakfast. They have both Japanese and American style. No English menu but server spoke enough English for us to know what to order. Beautiful view. Delicious food. ”
“ American style diner. Vegetarian options available. Pizza, pasta, burgers. Good spot, great service. Cola comes in glass bottle. Kid friendly, children menu. Patio seating with an amazing view! ”
“ Food is slightly above average. View was very nice. Good place for an afternoon meal. ”
“ The morning Japanese set is good. It contains an egg, salad, two small sides, rice, nori, and miso soup for around ¥900. It seems to be the only place that actually serves breakfast in the area. The coffee is American style. The view is excellent. Dogs are allowed on the terrace facing the water. ”
“ Freshly made cutler pork chop that regretfully didn’t taste as good. Maybe it was because I was never a big fan of cutler foods. The interior of the shop was well-decorated with American theme. A nice place to stop by for a tea break but probably not for regular meal. ”
